This topic makes me think of Edgar Allan Poe, who thought that beneath the face of the everyday lay the dark world of the human psyche, with all its fears and insanities. Not everything he wrote was twisted, with narrators on the verge of madness, but it was always close enough. Just for the record, this is NOT the way I feel in my everyday life.

My absolute favorite from him is the story about Maelström.
