Intricate, revisited

This is the third picture from last week's Illustration Friday topic, intricate, a study of wrinkles. I've given up on it, because what started off being a very detailed and precise thing has gotten totally out of hand. How many splotches of ink can a person spill on a drawing?! And I haven't figured out a way to get the masking material off the paper without smearing the corners.... So I didn't "finish" it at all...

Oh well, I guess. It's not like this is for anything other than my own making-a-picture pleasure (though it'd be nice to have it turn out decent).

  2. To be honest, I don't mind the splotches at all. The whole image reminds me of an old photograph or memory. I love the hatching; you have a lot of patience to do a full illustration with small marks.

My art professor had a grad student who spent hours every day drawing straight lines without a ruler. It took him 1000 lines before he could feel even semi-comfortable with his tools.

I say, you're doing fine with your inks. Don't worry about it. :)

  4. I would just let the splotches and blotches happen if they want to. They really add to it in a very nice and natural way. Is this Bernie Madoff? Just curious ...

  5. I like the style here. Whenever I try a new medium, and it doesn't turn out precisely the way I envisioned it, I like to follow the path that the medium lays. Follow the mistakes and flaws and work with them rather than against them, trying to make it fit some perfect ideal.

Right now, this style is the first look I've had of your work, and I think it's fabulous. If this were someone else's work, I bet you'd love it too.

  6. Kimmie--I'm not sure who this is. It was from a little picture I cut out from National Geographic. I think it was some kind of photographer.....

  7. I love the splotches. They add to your work and make it truly your own style which I think is so important.
