I've been told to quit drawing!

Well, someone finally told me to quit drawing them. I've been drawing people at meetings for years, and no one has ever said anything, or looked uncomfortable, but today someone did. She said that it was creepy and to cut it out. I was quite taken aback. And now I feel self-conscious about it. I've been doing it for years..... Do you think most people don't like it?

  1. That's a real shame and sounds like maybe someone having a bad day, but now that it's been said, it can't be unsaid. I think most people were probably absolutely fine with your drawing.

  2. I saw your comment on my illustration Friday at creativebrenda.blogspot and I just wanted to say thank you for your comment and I love your drawings.

I've always been a little timid about drawing strangers ever since someone in high school thought I was being creepy too. lol. So I always make sure they don't really know or I ask. I think it's a personal space issue. Most people will find it flattering or not harmful...and some people will be self conscious and find it intrusive (like when people hate being in a photograph at all). I say if it will be obvious your drawing them, it doesn't hurt to ask first. Saves you the trouble of offending them or coming off creepy.

  4. Oh yes, I woul;dn't let it worry me. Maybe that subject had bad things happen to them in a past life? Stalker perhaps? :)

They should be so lucky to be drawn by an excellent artist like yourself. Tell them they are privledged.

  5. Don't EVER quit drawing! You are too good. The person you were drawing should be flattered that you find them interesting.

  7. Theresa, your work is WONDERFUL! I know this post was a few months ago, but as I was looking through your blog, and this one made me so sad, not so much for the person wanting you to quit, but for the way they told you to do so. Who knows what people are thinking or how they express themselves... I love your style, your work's lovely! And thank you for the nice comment on my blog with sketches of Ellie Mae the coonhound! I hope that dog of your convinced you a walk in the woods would be good for everyone...
