Illustration Friday: Instinct

.
This time I actually had something in mind...but every time I started sketching it, something else came out...so I pursued the something elses, and this is the first one. It's a bit crude, and rubber cement doesn't work very well for a mask, and the ink kept dripping off the pencil I was using to spatter the ink off the toothbrush, but it's a first step.

  1. I like this one. I think the splatter works fine, and the theme is certainly very clear. There is something very pleasing in the composition and shading. It just makes me feel warm and fuzzy.

  2. I've been looking through your posts and I see a lot of movement in your work that's very energizing.
This is a wonderful drawing, and perfect for instinct!
Thanks for stopping by. I haven't read "The Warm Place" but I'll add it to my list :)

  3. Thanks for the comment on "Jane Worried".
I tend to look for easy solutions or shortcuts in communicating ideas. Partly because I'm lazy (hee-hee). And partly because the more ambiguous an image is the more the viewer gets pulled into the story because he/she has to imagine what's going on. The guy in the elevator might be a scary looking dude or maybe he's a mousy looking book worm. All the more reason to listen to those instincts!
    Splatters are tough to control.
I prefer to get my hands dirty and get a more responsive feel by using my thumb on the tooth brush. On the other hand, letting go and enjoying those happy little accidents is scary.. er, I mean fun. Plus Photoshop rocks!

  4. In response to Evie, my instinct is to just use my bare thumb-- but I get so much ink on my hands anyway, and it IS hard to scrub off, so I thought I'd try it this other way....
